Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish shone for his team in their goalless draw in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final tie against Middlesbrough at Villa Park last week, and we suggested that he could be a good summer signing for Newcastle United if the Midlands outfit lose out to Fulham in the final.
While the 22-year-old, rated at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, has had his fair share of problems off the field during his career to date, he has really stepped up to the plate for Steve Bruce’s men this term, and he impressed against Boro with a passing accuracy of 85%, while he made one key pass, successfully completed five dribbles and was fouled on seven occasions.
Magpies fans were loving the England U21 international just 12 months ago, as his 89th minute equaliser against Brighton and Hove Albion on the final day of the season ensured that the Tyneside outfit won the Championship title.
Despite his impressive end to the campaign, manager Rafa Benitez may well be looking for some competition for Ayoze Perez next term, and Grealish could be a great option seeing as his best position is as a central attacking midfielder, while he is also able to play on the left flank.
We asked Newcastle fans to vote on our poll to see whether they would want their club to sign him this summer, but a slight majority of 53% said they wouldn’t.
It will certainly be interesting to see what Benitez does do in the transfer market considering his attacking options clearly need some major tweaking, and whether he is handed the budget he wants by owner Mike Ashley.
