Ryan Fredericks is untested at the top level but could add spark to Newcastle’s right flank

As reported by The Chronicle, Newcastle United are interested in signing right-back Ryan Fredericks this summer.

What’s the story?

The Magpies need to improve their first team in the upcoming transfer window if they are to improve on their Premier League performance of this year, with the feeling that Rafa Benitez could be building something really special at St James’ Park.

One player on their radar is Fulham defender Ryan Fredericks, according to The Chronicle.

He is out-of-contract this summer meaning he fits the bill as a budget signing for a club who have comparatively less resources than other teams in the division. He is ordinarily rated at £3.6m by Transfermarkt.

The paper reckon Newcastle are rivalled by the likes of West Ham Untied and Crystal Palace for his signature.

Would he be a good signing?

With only DeAndre Yedlin at the club as a recognised top-flight right-back, there’s absolutely no doubt that Newcastle need competition in the area and a budget move for Fredericks ticks plenty of boxes.

Fredericks’ 2017/18 form was outstanding, covering his defensive duties well and providing Fulham with an attacking option on the right flank, with eight assists to his name in total.

However, he does lack Premier League experience, so it’s difficult to predict if he would actually be an upgrade on Yedlin, who has performed adequately at St James’ Park for the most part.
