Scottish skipper in line to become Rafa’s next transfer signing at Newcastle

According to reports from The Chronicle, Newcastle United are looking to make Blackburn Rovers defender Grant Hanley their fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

The Scotland international currently serves as skipper at Ewood Park, inheriting the armband from former centre-back partner Scott Dann in summer 2014.

He’s made 200 appearances for the Lancashire outfit across all competitions, including 31 in the Premier League before their relegation from the top flight in 2012.

The heart of defence was a real problem area for the Magpies last season, finishing the campaign with the fourth-worst goals conceded record in the Premier League.

Likewise, the recent departures of Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor have left a hole in the Magpies’ backline that Rafa Benitez is hoping Hanley will fill.

The Chronicle claim the Tynesiders are working to make the 24-year-old their fourth signing of the summer window, following deals for goalkeeper Matz Sels, midfielder Matt Ritchie and striker Dwight Gayle.
