Although the scoreline was only 1-0, Newcastle were soundly beaten by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the Toon managing more possession than their opponents, registering 56%, they were still unable to do much with it - they had just two shots on target, whilst the Eagles boasted nine.

Steve Bruce will have been disappointed with several performances from his players, including that of Sean Longstaff.

Defensively, he struggled to cope. Whilst he may have won all four of his aerial duels, he prevailed in just five of the 15 he took part in on the ground. Alongside that, he was dribbled past on four occasions, and also gave away one foul. He wasn't much better going forward either - his one key pass does not paper over the cracks of the 20 times he lost possession, for example.

Last year, Longstaff burst on to the scene at St. James' Park. He made 13 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one assist, and arguably would have played far more had an injury not cut his season short.

Such was the quality of his performances, Manchester United were linked with a move for him for much of the previous summer transfer window. In fact, in August, The Shields Gazette reported that they were prepared to pay £35m to take him to Old Trafford - a significant amount of money for a club like Newcastle, especially when you consider their record signing Joelinton cost just £5m more.

This season, though, he has failed to hit the same heights as before, and he has been slammed by portions of his own fanbase for his displays. He has not scored at all in the Premier League, and has just one measly assist in 19 outings in the top-flight.

Currently valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, it would be hard to imagine Newcastle getting much more than that based on his current form. It seems that Mike Ashley may have made an error here - he should have taken the cash when he had the chance.
