Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has targeted a move for Bologna defender Filip Helander, according to The Express.

What's the word?

In the summer, the Spanish coach once again struggled to get the funds that he wanted for transfers.

It seems to be an ongoing issue with club owner Mike Ashley, but it appears that Benitez is already looking at targets for the winter window.

The Express reports that Benitez has put Bologna defender Helander at the top of his wishlist for when the transfer market reopens.

The 26-year-old has made 29 appearances for the Serie A club so far this season, but he is currently nursing a knee injury.

Is Helander the right target?

Newcastle find themselves in a desperate situation as they are yet to win a Premier League match seven games into the season.

In fact, the Magpies have lost five and drawn two since the campaign got underway, but their defence is not the biggest problem.

The club recruited Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez in the summer to boost the centre-back options, therefore moving for another figure would make little sense.

The more pressing issues for Newcastle are situated in midfield and in the left-back role, so perhaps Benitez should focus on strengthening those areas if funds become available in January.
