Striker could be too expensive for Newcastle

Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis

Newcastle United are struggling to agree a fee for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis, reports The Daily Mail.

The French forward is a target for the Premier League side, but negotiations have hit a stumbling block over the £8million being demanded by Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

While Newcastle’s Director of Football Joe Kinnear has been trying to orchestrate a move for Gomis, Magpies attacker Moussa Sissoko has also been trying his hands at negotiations with the former Toulouse trying to persuade the fellow Frenchman to move to St. James’ Park.

“Bafe Gomis is my friend and he says to me that he wants to come to Newcastle, but it is not easy with the president (of Lyon) or an agent. I don’t know if its finished yet or not,” Sissoko said.

“If he comes here, it is a very good move for him. I will keep the message the same to him – we would like him to come to Newcastle. Maybe I will talk to him this week again.

“Newcastle are a very good team and now we have to show it. The team is feeling good ahead of Manchester City. We have one of the toughest games you could have on the first game of the season but if I play well and hard maybe we can win there.”

The Toon have already added one more French forward to the squad, after securing Loic Remy on a season-long loan from QPR. The 26-year-old could feature in Newcastle’s first match of the new season against Manchester City next Monday.

Is Gomis the right man for Newcastle? Is he worth £8million?
