The Chalkboard: Newcastle must offer Yedlin more protection

A late Wolves equaliser robbed Newcastle United of all three points at Molineux on Monday night. After the dogged and determined defensive display they had turned in, the Magpies will feel that they deserved the win.

However, credit must go to Nuno Espirito Santo, as his Wolves side were able to eventually identify the north-east outfit’s defensive frailties, target and exploit them.

On the chalkboard

One such defensive weak point that Wolves targeted was DeAndre Yedlin. As reported by The Chronicle, the home side concentrated their attacks down the flank being patrolled by the Newcastle right wing-back.

The 25-year-old offers Rafa Benitez’s side plenty of pace and attacking intent going forwards, but defensively he lacks diligence and focus. He struggled to marshal the likes of Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez at Molineux on Monday.

More teams will recognise that the 57-cap USA international can be beaten if targeted, so Benitez must take steps to protect the player in future.

Support and protection

In replacing Yedlin Newcastle would lose a lot of the threat they pose on the counter-attack. Instead, Benitez must find a way of making Yedlin less of a liability whilst he is on the pitch. He can do this by instructing one of his midfielders to shuttle across when required to help Yedlin defend his flank.

A midfielder such as Mohamed Diame, who possesses plenty of defensive awareness, would be well-suited to such a task. The 31-year-old could offer Yedlin the protection and support he needs, but that he lacked to Newcastle’s cost on Monday. Benitez must act now to ensure this weakness doesn’t cost his team again.
