Newcastle are interested in adding a striker in January and Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos has taken Steve Bruce's fancy, according to the Daily Star.

What's the word?

The Magpies' forwards have struggled this term and Sky Sports report that Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto could depart the club when the transfer window opens.

That would leave space for a new player, and considering Morelos is in top form it is little surprise that Bruce likes what he sees in the Colombian.

However, due to his importance for his current club, the Daily Star suggest that a January move will be very difficult to pull off, and the fee that could be involved may deter interest since his contract expires in 2023, despite Transfermarkt rating him at £6.75m.

Just the right man

Morelos has grabbed headlines in Scotland for both the right and wrong reasons, but the fact that he is loved by his manager says everything, with Steven Gerrard labelling him a "top player".

He may have seven red cards in his Rangers career but their title challenge would likely stop short without him, and that is why they are so keen to keep ahold of him.

Bruce is in need of a goalscorer as his four strikers have a combined total of just two goals, and since the Colombia international has 28 strikes in 35 games this season he could be exactly what is needed.

Added to that, he has a bullish nature which allows him to get in the face of opponents and battle for every ball, hence his nickname 'El Bufalo'. Again, this is something Bruce's side lacks.

It has often caused him to exert himself too much, as the red cards evidence, but since Newcastle operate with a lone striker they need someone who can work hard and make the ball stick up-front.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Liverpool signings...

He may cost a pretty penny but that shouldn't stop him from being a target.

In other news, Jonjo Shelvey outlined his importance to the team with a rare poor showing against Everton.
