As Sir Tom Finney gets set to celebrate his 90th birthday on the 5th of April, a huge amount of plaudits are flying around within the footballing world at present, with many journalists, pundits and former players conceding that the Preston winger is arguably the greatest player to ever don the Three Lions shirt. That is quite an accolade to bestow on a player that the great Bill Shankly once claimed would be great in any team, in any era. The large majority of us were never unfortunate to see him play but you ask anyone that was and they will certainly be in agreement that Finney was simply one if not the best of his generation.
Whether Finney was indeed the best player to don an England shirt will always remain open to debate, but it got me thinking about the modern era and some of the absolute shockers we have had represent our country, not only for one cap, but for a sustained period of time.
