According to reports in the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United are locked in talks to sign £20m-rated Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen before the January transfer window slams shut.

The Chronicle Live says that Magpies manager Rafa Benitez wants the 27-year-old to boost his side's goal-shy attack, with his team only scoring 22 goals in their 24 Premier League matches so far this season.

Despite the £20m price – which would mean he would be a club-record buy for the Tyneside outfit – the report adds that owner Mike Ashley isn't willing to walk away from a deal, with managing director Lee Charnley the man tasked with getting the transfer over the line before Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Evening Standard reported on Wednesday that Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that the out of favour Michy Batshuayi, who is rated at €25m (£21.8m) according to Transfermarkt, would be allowed to leave on loan this month if they bring a new striker to the club, with AS Roma's Edin Dzeko heavily linked with a return to England.

While Benitez can't bring Batshuayi to St James' Park on loan after signing Kenedy in a similar agreement from the Blues already this month, he could be making a shrewd move by completing a permanent deal for the 24-year-old.

Here are three reasons Newcastle must forget Jorgensen and wait to sign the Belgium international instead…

Blues boss Antonio Conte has never really fancied the Belgium international even though he can't really be classed as a young player anymore, but he has still scored 17 goals in 51 appearances for the Premier League holders – despite the vast majority of those outings coming from the substitutes’ bench.

Batshuayi does seem to have that knack of being in the right place at the right time – and has shown previously that he can find the net with both feet and his head – and he could be the all-round striker that Newcastle are desperately searching for to ease their goalscoring woes.

Permanent deal

While Antonio Conte said Batshuayi would be allowed to leave on loan if Chelsea sign someone like Edin Dzeko in the next few days, it seems unlikely that the Italian would rule out a permanent move away if the west London outfit received the right offer given the striker's lack of first-team starts.

According to Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old is rated at €25 (£21.8m) – only marginally more than Jorgensen would likely cost – and if Newcastle offered something around that amount they could get the Belgium international, and put down a real statement to Rafa Benitez in the process.

Point to prove

If Batshuayi does leave Chelsea – either on loan or on a permanent basis – this month, he will certainly have a big point to prove.

The 24-year-old will feel that he has never got the consistent opportunities in the team that he perhaps deserved following his £33m move from Marseille in 2016, and he will be determined to show that he can score goals regularly at this level.

With a World Cup squad place with Belgium also up for the grabs, the striker will be highly motivated and that would only be a good thing for Newcastle in their bid for survival in the Premier League.
