Newcastle United will look to continue to stay out and away from the Premier League relegation zone when they face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, having picked up a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last weekend.

The Magpies looked to be on course for three huge points as they led 2-0 against the Cherries going into the last 10 minutes thanks to Dwight Gayle's first-half brace, but late goals from Adam Smith and Dan Gosling gave Eddie Howe's men a share of the spoils.

The draw left Rafa Benitez's side two points above the bottom three ahead of a daunting trip to Merseyside, to face a team that has scored 65 goals in 28 top flight matches so far this season and one that has a rampant front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino that have 63 goals between them in all competitions this term.

The trio all found the net in the 4-1 victory against West Ham United at Anfield on Saturday, and Benitez will be well aware of the threat they pose as he looks to ensure that his men keep picking up the points they need to avoid an instant return to the Championship.

The Spaniard may be tempted to stick with the same XI that picked up a result against Bournemouth, but the former Liverpool boss will regret it if he fails to make a couple of alterations on his return to Anfield.

Here are two changes the 57-year-old must make to his Newcastle team when they face Jurgen Klopp’s side…

Isaac Hayden for Jonjo Shelvey

Benitez will seriously be considering making changes to his midfield ahead of the trip to Anfield having seen the goalscoring form that Liverpool are in right now.

Shelvey has been more influential for Newcastle in recent weeks having endured a disappointing spell that had kept him on the substitutes' bench for a number of matches, but he missed a good chance against Bournemouth when the score was 2-0 and picked up a knock that means he is a doubt for the clash against his former team on Saturday.

If the 26-year-old isn't fully fit then Benitez should look to bring Hayden in for him in the middle of the park to try and give the visitors some control in that area, and limit the service to the formidable front three they are set to come up against.

Mikel Merino for Ayoze Perez

Perez played behind Dwight Gayle against Bournemouth, but the Spaniard's lack of defensive strength should mean that he starts this match on the substitutes' bench.

Benitez can still play a system that would see the team play with a 4-5-1 formation when they are defending and a 4-4-1-1 when they are attacking, but Mo Diame is better suited to playing that role from a defensive point of view than Perez would be, while still being able to drive forward with the ball.

The Spanish manager should bring in Merino for the attacking midfielder at Anfield, and a central midfield trio of the 21-year-old, Hayden and Diame should give the visitors a bit of bite, strength and ideally some control of possession against Jurgen Klopp's men.
