Newcastle United have already made a couple of additions in the summer transfer market, but manager Rafa Benitez will likely want more in the coming days and weeks – especially with the window closing early on August 9 this year.

The signings of Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-Yueng have hardly broken the budget, and there will certainly be a few positions they need to strengthen in if they are to improve on the impressive 10th-place finish they achieved last term.

Those reinforcements could come in attacking positions in particular given the Tyneside outfit only managed to score 39 goals in their 38 Premier League matches during the 2017/18 campaign, especially with someone like Aleksandar Mitrovic looking likely to be on his way through the St James' Park exit door sooner rather than later.

Benitez and owner Mike Ashley have yet to really flex their muscles in terms of transfer fees – something the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss will demand – and now the priority must be to make some marquee additions, in conjunction with letting individuals leave.

Here are two huge signings Newcastle must make this summer, as well as one major sale…

Following such a successful loan spell during the 2017/18 campaign, it is no surprise that Benitez wants to bring the Brazilian back to Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old made a huge impression in the Magpies' battle against the drop and became a big fans' favourite, and the fact that he already knows the club and their style of play means that he would take no time to settle in again at St James' Park.

Whether it is another loan or on a permanent deal, there is no doubt that he would be a big signing in Newcastle's bid to improve again.

With Aleksandar Mitrovic looking likely to leave and Joselu failing to really make his mark at St James' Park yet, it seems clear that Benitez's transfer priority is to bring a new centre-forward to Tyneside before August 9.

The fact that Rondon is said to be available for £16.5m because of a release clause in his contract following West Bromwich Albion's relegation to the Championship certainly makes him a realistic option for them, and he has all of the attributes to be a success for the Magpies.

While his goal record isn't too prolific, the fact that he can hold the ball up well and is willing to work hard for his team means he would fit in well.

With new faces coming in, it seems inevitable that some of the key first-team players from last season will be on their way, and one of the headline exits may well be Ritchie.

The Scotland international has been a key player and a regular in the starting XI over the course of the past two campaigns, but with Stoke City said to be willing to bid big to bring him to the Britannia Stadium, Benitez may choose to cash in so he can boost his own transfer budget.

The 28-year-old perhaps didn't make as much of an impact in the final third last term as may have been expected from him, and a move could be best for all parties.
