Newcastle finally gave their fans something to cheer about on Tuesday evening, and the performance of Fabian Schar could have major effects on the club’s transfer plans.

Newcastle fans are absolutely desperate for some new additions, as the Magpies are well and truly in the relegation race this season.

While someone who can score and create goals is no doubt top of the wish list, another central midfielder is a priority as well, and Rafael Benitez may have just found a genius solution to the latter.

Schar filled in as a defensive midfielder in Tuesday’s FA Cup win over Blackburn, and the Swiss international was absolutely superb, so much so the boss may consider allowing Jonjo Shelvey to leave the club in order to fund new signings.

While the 14th-placed side in the Championship will certainly not be Schar’s stiffest test, it’s quite a feat to walk into Ewood Park and be the best player on the pitch in an unfamiliar position.

Naturally a centre back, the Swiss international started as the deep-lying midfielder behind an inexperienced duo of Callum Roberts and Sean Longstaff, and he made the match look easy with his excellent reading of the game.

The 27 year-old made two tackles, four interceptions and 11 clearances, and also won three aerial duels and blocked one shot.

His work on the ball was even more impressive though, making one key pass and completing 11 out of 21 attempted long balls, exactly the role Shelvey is supposed to perform.

Bye bye Shelvey?

Shelvey was a very popular figure on Tyneside last season, both to the fans and the manager, but the 26 year-old has fallen by the wayside so far this campaign.

Due to a combination of bad luck, bad form and injuries, the six-cap England international has started just eight Premier League games.

Although it now appears West Ham won't be swooping for the former Liverpool man, he may find starting opportunities even harder to come by going forward if Schar can develop into the deep-lying midfield role.
