Roberto Martinez described his side’s late draw against Arsenal as being “worth more than a point” for the Premier League strugglers, and it is hard to disagree with the Italian’s assessment, considering some of the Latics’ recent performances.

Coming back from a goal down against a much changed but increasingly resolute Arsenal side was a major indicator that Wigan, many people’s tips for relegation this season, have stomach for the fight, particularly after they had lost Charles N’Zogbia to a brainless red card.

Newcastle have endured two formidable tests thus far this Christmas period, and have contributed to their downfall in each. Alan Pardew will be happy to have tested the resolve of title challenging sides Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, however he will be desperate to take something from a trip to the DW as his relationship with the St James’ Park faithful remains lukewarm at best.

Wigan really are wildly unpredictable, and performances can vary from minute to minute, not to mention game to game. Newcastle have been solid away from home so far this year, and Wigan’s inability to string results together is reflective of their current league standing.

Prediction: 1-2
