According to Turkish media outlet A Spor, Fulham are ready to rival Fenerbahce in the race to sign Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip in January, and the Reds should offload him to their Premier League rivals and make a shock loan swoop for Gary Cahill.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Cameroon international has found first-team minutes hard to come by for the Merseyside outfit this season, with the impressive Joe Gomez seemingly pushing him down to fourth in the centre-back pecking order with Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren also ahead of him.

The 27-year-old has only started one Premier League fixture this term and A Spor report that Fenerbahce are keen to bring him to Turkey, although they could face competition from the Cottagers as Claudio Ranieri looks to strengthen his newly-inherited squad.

Matip would certainly add some much-needed quality and experience to a Fulham backline that is comfortably the worst in the English top flight right now in terms of goals conceded.

What should Liverpool do?

While selling Matip to Fenerbahce could be a tempting deal for the Reds, they should instead loan the central defender to Fulham instead to get some much-needed game time and to improve his Premier League experience ahead of a return in the summer.

The 27-year-old isn't a player that can make a huge difference for them as they look to win their first ever Premier League title this season, but Cahill certainly is even if it would be a shock transfer move.

The Guardian report that as a thank you for the 32-year-old's services to the club over the previous six years, Chelsea are ready to loan their captain out for the second-half of the campaign despite the fact that he will then be available on a free when his contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer.

The experienced centre-back has won the Premier League title twice, and while Gomez and Lovren are decent enough defenders Liverpool could really benefit from having a player alongside Van Dijk who has been there and done it as they look to lift the famous trophy come what May.
