Own goal? Foul? Southampton net odd opener against Spurs

In the battle for the Europa League ‘prize’ it could come down to fine margins between Southampton and Spurs. The pair seem to be scrapping for the spot behind Liverpool, with getting into the continental cup still a somewhat desirable prize.

So could the Saints’ opener have a big impact? Maybe. But that doesn’t tell the whole story, with the goal at St Mary’s bizarre to say the least. After a lovely pacey break from Sadio Mane, the ball fizzed through to Ryan Mason, who knocked it towards Hugo Lloris and Ben Davies, and it looked as though the attacked fizzled out.

However, big Graziano Pelle came in all barrel chested to barge the Welsh full-back, before extending a leg to poke the ball home. Was it a foul? Did Davies actually send the ball in himself? It’s hard to tell, and we certainly wouldn’t want to be on the dubious goals panel today!
