Parisi believes Arsenal deal is close & Wenger’s £20m transfer dilemma – Best of AFC

Amid pure twitter conjecture that Robin Van Persie was furiously packing his bags and heading off to the fair old Italian city of Turin there were more pressing issues for Arsene Wenger to focus on. The idea that Van Persie will soon be leaving the Emirates Stadium is becoming more and more inevitable by the day leading Gunners chief to deduce that strengthening his attack is the correct way to offset the departure of his captain. But is he investing money in the right areas? After spending a combined £22 million on Oliver Giroud and Lukas Podolski earlier this summer to provide competition up front  Wenger is now close to clinching a double deal for attacking midfield duo Santi Cazorla and Nuri Sahin despite having a wealth of options in that position. Having conceded 49 goals last term the need to bolster a paper thin back four has seemingly passed Wenger by. Thomas Vermaelen’s sketchy injury record leaves only Laurent Koscielny and the shaky Per Mertesacker as the only senior central defenders in the squad whilst both full back positions are in need of serious attention. Should he fail to fortify his rearguard ahead of the new season it could prove to be the North London club’s achilles heel in their Champions League ambitions

This week on FFC just how difficult his Steve Bould’s task to tighten up the Gunners’ defence and could Alex Song be set to leave the Premier League in favour of a move to La Liga?

Quote of the Week

“With Montpellier, it wasn’t written that we were going to be champions, so that’s what made it more beautiful. With Arsenal, we might not be favourites, like the Manchester clubs, to be champions. We’re outsiders, but I’m convinced that we can do something big. That’s what we did with Montpellier, and I’m proud with what I accomplished there.” Oliver Giroud believes Arsenal can upset the odds next season and challenge for the title
