Manchester City kicked off their Premier League campaign this Sunday in the same manner they finished the last, calmly dispensing of Arsenal in a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.
There were moments when it appeared the home side would get back into the match but City’s quality eventually told on the opening day of the season against Unai Emery’s new-look Gunners team.
Following the final whistle, we asked Manchester City fans to issue player ratings for each of those involved in the victory. Here’s a quick rundown of the three players who received the highest average scores, including the Man of the Match…
Benjamin Mendy – 8.1: After missing pretty much the whole of last season Mendy is already looking like a new signing for City, bringing an extra element of sheer brawn and offensive flair to their attack when powering forward on the overlap. That was the direct source of both goals on Sunday, as Mendy played a cute square ball across the edge of the box for the opener before cutting back from closer to the byline for City’s second. Pep Guardiola’s clearly keen to keep the Frenchman’s feet on the ground with some harsh words post-match, but Mendy could be a real asset for City this term.
Raheem Sterling – 8.2: Silencing the critics once again, it was Sterling who broke the deadlock at the Emirates Stadium with a powerful finish from the peripheries of the Arsenal box. He was involved in most of what City did going forward, and could have opened his account for the season much earlier had it not been for a smart save from Petr Cech. Sterling faces extra competition this season following the arrival of Riyad Mahrez but already appears to be embracing it.
Bernardo Silva (MOTM) – 8.8: Silva put the icing on the cake with City’s second goal, a fantastic conversion of Mendy’s pull-back, but perhaps a rating of 8.8 is a little generous. After all, Silva completed just 70% of his passes, didn’t make a single tackle or interception and failed to create any chances. Then again, statistics don’t always tell the whole story and it’s clear City supporters are chuffed with the 30-cap Portugal international’s performance on Sunday.
