There have certainly been more memorable clashes between Manchester United and Arsenal down the years, the most iconic moment of their recent encounter being the honorary trophy awarded to Arsene Wenger by Sir Alex Ferguson before the opening whistle.
But the Red Devils nonetheless deserve credit for doing just enough to get themselves over the line while struggling to produce their best form, with Marouane Fellaini grabbing a late winner after earlier strikes from Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Earlier this week, we asked Man United fans to issue player ratings for each of those involved in the 2-1 win. Here’s a rundown of the three players that impressed them most, picking up the highest average ratings…
David De Gea – 7/10: The Spanish shot-stopper certainly had an easier afternoon than in the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season, when United’s win owed everything to his stunning display between the sticks. But amid an underwhelming performance from the Red Devils, the 27-year-old once again showed his consistency with two saves, while Mkhitaryan could only beat him by squeezing a shot through Victor Lindelof’s legs.
Marouane Fellaini – 7.1/10: He continues to divide opinion but there’s no question the Belgian midfielder can be crucially effective against certain opposition and Arsenal would appear to fall into that category. He gave United a new dynamic to throw at the Gunners after coming on from the bench and within half an hour mustered up the second-most attempts at goal of any United player after Pogba, including the stoppage time winner.
Paul Pogba: 7.2/10: After falling afoul of Jose Mourinho earlier this year, Pogba defied his critics on Sunday with another impressive performance against a top team, adding to his displays versus Manchester City and Tottenham. His opening goal, albeit somewhat fortuitous, put United on the path to victory and his drive from midfield was a recurring theme of the 2-1 win, finishing up with the most dribbles of any Red Devils player – four.
