Player Ratings: The three players who impressed Newcastle fans most vs Chelsea

Newcastle gave their fans a real treat on the final day of the Premier League season, beating last term’s champions Chelsea in a 3-0 romping at St. James’ Park. That not only ended the Blues’ slender Champions League hopes but also secured the Magpies a top ten finish, a fantastic achievement considering they only returned to the top flight last summer.

Following Sunday’s shock mauling, we asked Newcastle fans to issue player ratings for each of the Toon stars involved. Here’s a look at three players who impressed the Magpies support the most, picking up the highest average scores…

Jamaal Lascelles – 8.3/10: Sunday’s performance will mostly be remembered for Chelsea’s defensive frailties but it shouldn’t be forgotten how sturdy the Magpies looked at the other end, reducing Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud’s impact. Captain and centre-back Jamaal Lascelles played a big part in that and was solid on the ball as well, completing 93% of his passes.

Jonjo Shelvey – 8.4/10: The midfielder may have been awarded a fortuitous assist as Ayoze Perez tucked away his shot-come-pass but Sunday marked another impressive performance from the England international, whose progressive forward passes kept Newcastle on the front foot. Tellingly finished the match with the most touches of any Magpies player.

Ayoze Perez – 8.5/10: The Spaniard’s finished the season in glistening form, six goals and two assists in his last eight appearances including Sunday’s brace. Rafa Benitez has kept his faith in Perez despite the forward often drawing criticism from the Toon faithful and is now reaping the rewards. Took the most efforts at goal and created the most chances of any player on the pitch.
