They did leave themselves a few hairy minutes in stoppage time after Erik Lamela scored a late goal to put pressure on the Merseysiders, but Jurgen Klopp’s side had already done enough to return to Anfield with all three points.

It wasn’t an occasion in which individuals particularly stood out for Liverpool – instead, their overall performance got the Reds over the line.

But midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum received special praise on Twitter after the full-time whistle, with supporters claiming he bossed Tottenham counterpart Mousa Dembele and describing the Dutchman as simply ‘on fire’.
