Player Ratings: Who was Manchester City’s MOTM in the Community Shield?

Start as you mean to go on. That is what Pep Guardiola will have told his Manchester City cast before their first game of the new season, and that’s exactly what they did in the Community Shield.

The seasonal curtain raiser at Wembley may be ambiguous in importance, but the Citizens appeared keen to make clear on Sunday that we should expect similar dominance from them this season to what we continuously witnessed throughout 2017/18.

Sergio Aguero scored twice to take his tally for City beyond the 200 mark, while Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva dazzled and delighted in midfield. Both the teenager and the 30-cap Portuguese finished up with an assist to their name, although the latter’s impact was arguably more significant as he meticulously orchestrated City’s attacks.

However, John Stones impressed at the heart of defence as well, making 91 passes without giving Alvaro Morata a sniff, and last term’s long-term absentee Benjamin Mendy showed what he can bring to the team this season down the left-hand side.
