Portsmouth are closing in on the signing of Tommy Smith after Watford accepted a bid for their striker.
Smith, 29, looked to be on his way to the Hornets’ Championship rivals Reading after they had an offer accepted earlier in the week.
However, Pompey have joined the race for Smith after their own bid – believed to be in the region of £1.9million – was also accepted.
Smith, who scored 17 goals in 44 Championship appearances last season, was left out of the Watford squad which took on Leeds United in the second round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.
“Watford can this evening confirm that club has received and accepted an offer from Portsmouth for attacker Tommy Smith,” confirmed a club statement.
“The Premiership side made their bid for the 29-year-old late on and it is now down to the player to decide upon a move to Fratton Park or Reading, after the Hornets had accepted an earlier bid from the Berkshire-based club.”
