As the final whistles sounded across Europe last night, there was an interesting narrative for the English clubs involved. Both Liverpool and Arsenal spent £16m on new strikers over the summer, and both players started up front for their sides in Champions League action. One scored a hat-trick in a crushing win, the other barely mustered a single chance in a disappointing loss.
We are of course talking about Danny Welbeck and Mario Balotelli, and to make the story that little bit more intriguing, Arsenal passed on the chance to sign the now Liverpool ace in favour of nabbing their new main man on deadline day… It may be early in the season, but it looks as if the bullet Arsene Wenger dodged has really hit Brendan Rodgers hard!
