Last week, many Liverpool fans would have felt a metaphorical body blow when news emerged that Barcelona had tabled an offer for their star man Philippe Coutinho. The Daily Mail reported that the Spanish giants offered £72m to Liverpool, who have not entertained the offer as they value him at a much higher figure.Manager Jurgen Klopp was asked about the speculation during the Reds’ pre-season tour of Asia, and he responded by telling journalists that Coutinho is not for sale. With over a month until the transfer window slams shut, there is expected to be some anxious faces among the Liverpool following, and Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier did not ease any fears. The former Southampton striker rubbed salt into the wound on Twitter when he claimed that Coutinho deserved to join Barcelona. There seemed to be a tongue-in-cheek dig at Liverpool’s interest in Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, who according to the Daily Echo has effectively gone on strike to force through a move away from the club.

As expected, Le Tissier’s comments caused quite a stir among Liverpool fans, with one hitting back by claiming that the Merseyside outfit are not a feeder club like the Saints, referring to the numerous players that the Reds have bought from St Mary’s over the years.

Le Tissier responded by reminding the supporter that Liverpool have lost some big names to Barcelona in the past.
