Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Liverpool would be interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere if he became available.

The England international's future has been in doubt for some time due to his current contract situation.

The 25-year-old, who has been plagued by injury problems during his career at the North London outfit, will become a free agent at the end of the season.

Manager Arsene Wenger has revealed to reporters that he will hold contract talks with Wilshere at the end of the month.

Depending on how those go, the midfielder could either be sold in January or will move to another club on a free transfer next summer.

Merson, who played for Arsenal in his career, thinks that Liverpool could form an interest in Wilshere.

The football pundit has suggested that the midfielder could replace Philippe Coutinho, who was denied a move to Barcelona in the summer but continues to be linked to the Catalan giants.

While on Sky Sports News, Merson said:

"I think Liverpool would take him all day long. They rely on Coutinho to break people down, if you get Jack Wilshere as well then you’ve got two people who can break people down.

“At the moment they are very reliant on Coutinho. If Coutinho doesn’t do it, there are not too many others who can put the ball through the eye of a needle who play for Liverpool. For me I think Liverpool would be all over him.”
