Ref In Focus: Paul Tierney appointment is good news for Tottenham fans

Tottenham head to Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon as they look to build on a strong run of recent results that have seen them rise to third in the Premier League table, as well as qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League and reaching the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

A win against Everton would put Mauricio Pochettino’s side just two points behind Manchester City after the champions were beaten 3-2 by Crystal Palace on Saturday, and Spurs fans will be especially pleased with the refereeing appointment for their game.

Paul Tierney will take charge of his 12th Premier League game so far this season, and of the 11 he has already officiated, 64 per cent have been won by the away side. Whether this is a case of the 37-year-old evening up the perceived home advantage or just a coincidence, it will be comfort for Tottenham fans going into the difficult test against the Toffees.

Marco Silva has transformed this Everton side with the help of his impressive summer signings and they now have a clear identity and play an attractive style of football.

The appointment of Tierney then seems to be a positive one, as out of 17 Premier League referees this season he is eighth for both fouls per game and fouls per tackle.

This should mean that, if the players on both teams are sensible, the game will be open and free flowing – with the advantage played wherever possible. It is also worth noting that in the 11 games he has taken charge of so far this season, Tierney is yet to oversee a draw in the Premier League, so it should be a feast for the neutrals.

However, one thing that both sets of players will need to be wary of with the Wigan-born ref in the middle is his fondness for producing a yellow card when infringements do occur. In fact, he is fourth out of the 17 referees for bookings produced per game this season, meaning tough-tackling midfielders such as Idrissa Gueye and Moussa Sissoko will have to watch their step.
