It’s almost customary for top clubs like Liverpool to change goalkeepers for the cup competitions and Jurgen Klopp has revealed that’s exactly what he’ll do on Friday night when Everton come to Anfield in the Third Round of the FA Cup.
“Loris will play [against Everton]. I am pretty sure Wardy is sub, which means Simon has a little break. Danny is a young, very skilled goalkeeper with a lot of potential, which means space for improvement, and we are quite desperate to build on that together with him.”
It’s little surprise the Reds gaffer is giving Loris Karius a chance to prove himself, having acquired the 24-year-old from Koln in summer 2016 in the hope of him eventually replacing Simon Mignolet as Liverpool’s No.1.
However, it appears most Liverpool supporters don’t agree with that decision; we asked Reds fans earlier this week which of the club’s three senior goalkeepers should start in tonight’s Merseyside derby and it was Danny Ward who won our poll with 59% of the vote.
The 6 foot 4 shot-stopper has only ever made three first-team appearances for the Reds but impressed on loan at Huddersfield last season, playing a key role in their promotion to the Premier League, and is clearly highly-rated by the Anfield faithful.
