Three-man defences were once deemed incompatible with the top end of the Premier League, but they're unquestionably the vogue setup at the moment. Since Antonio Conte introduced it at Chelsea at the start of last season, inspiring a title-winning run, it has been mimicked by Arsenal, Tottenham and even Jose Mourinho on occasion.

In fact, the tactical ploy has served Manchester United pretty well. They've won five of the six games in which they've used three-man defences this season, including a current run of three consecutive wins against Watford, Arsenal and CSKA Moscow.

But Manchester United face their biggest challenge of the season so far this weekend, in the form of bitter rivals Manchester City making the short trip to Old Trafford. And sometimes, it just makes more sense to revert back to the formation you're most comfortable with and accustomed to - in United's case, the 4-2-3-1 system we've consistently seen from Mourinho's sides over the last few years.

With that in mind, we asked United fans earlier this week whether a back three or a back four would give them the best chance of beating City this Sunday and according to our poll, 81% of United fans would like Mourinho to stick with a back three.
