Jose Mourinho recently admitted that he was choosing his central defenders with more than one eye on who could feasibly make it into their respective countries’ World Cup squads.
That meant that Eric Bailly – who has again struggled with injuries throughout this season – was shunted down the pecking order as Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo were given the opportunity to prove their World Cup credentials.
However, after Gareth Southgate’s England squad announcement this week, Smalling will not be going to the World Cup – he is not even on standby – which may grant Mourinho greater scope to bring Bailly back into the fold for this weekend’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.
