Between The Lines: Solskjaer’s comments could mean bad news for Sheffield United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s comments about Manchester United’s ambitions in the Europa League next season should worry Sheffield United fans, as he may choose to give Dean Henderson a first-team chance.

What’s been said then?

The Norwegian has highlighted the Europa League as an opportunity to give the young players at Old Trafford a chance to prove themselves. As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer said:

“Sometimes you can use Europa League as something positive, as Chelsea and Arsenal have done this year and as we did a couple of years ago when we won the Europa League.

“So you talk about smiling, I’m an optimist by nature, so you will make the most of it, is it giving players like Chongy, Mason Greenwood, James Garner game time? We have to make something positive out of it, no matter what.”

How can this be interpreted?

Although he doesn’t explicitly mention Henderson by name, you have to think he is in with a chance of getting a game at United next season.

If the Red Devils boss is looking to test out some youngsters who better to experiment with than a 22-year-old stopper who is apparently in line for an England call-up?

With David De Gea entering the final year of his contract his future at the club is uncertain, and the 20-time champions of England may very soon be looking for a new keeper.

The Europa League is a good chance for Solskjaer to test Henderson’s mettle and see if he is a suitable replacement for the Spaniard.

This, of course, is awful news for Sheffield United, as they were hoping to bring the goalie back to the club where he kept 20 clean sheets this season.

Recent links with Leicester keeper Danny Ward may show that Henderson’s destination next season is already settled, and it’s not looking likely to be Bramall Lane.
