According to reports in the Daily Mail, Celtic are interested in signing George Baldock from Sheffield United.
The right-sided player was brilliant for Chris Wilder’s team last season, but the Blades would be foolish to not cash in on him if the Scottish champions make a bid.
The 26-year-old can play as either a right midfielder or a right-back, making his versatility is amongst his strongest traits.
More often than not he was utilised as a wing-back for the Yorkshire club last season as they used Wilder’s patented 5-2-1-2 formation to great effect.
He made only 27 appearances for the Blades last term though as he shared a lot of his workload with Kieron Freeman.
He is a tireless runner and a terrific passer of the ball. If he made the move to Celtic Park, he would undoubtedly be fantastic.
Even though Baldock would be an excellent signing for Celtic, he wouldn’t be missed too much by his current club.
Several Sheffield United players have just put in the best season of their careers, and their stock is the highest it will likely ever be. Baldock certainly fits into this category.
The right-back has never played above Championship level, and he has rarely looked like he is ready to make the step up to the Premier League. Although he works well in Wilder’s system, he isn’t irreplaceable, and if a move to Scotland gives the Blades the funds they need to strengthen that position, they must let him go.
The worst case scenario is that Kieron Freeman becomes the starter at right-back for the newly-promoted side, and that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.
