One of English football's most enduring rivalries comes to the fore again on Sunday as Manchester United host Liverpool in a massive derby match at Old Trafford.

The stakes in the fixture have rarely been higher in recent years, with both sides pushing for Champions League positions and Liverpool leading the rest in the pursuit of Chelsea at the top of the table.

The sides played out a fairly dull 0-0 draw at Anfield in the last fixture in October, so supporters of both teams, and neutrals alike, will be hoping for a more exciting encounter this time.

It's a game that's produced some dramatic moments, some real quality and some exciting moments in the past. From Mark Hughes to Dimitar Berbatov, through Steven Gerrard, it's a Premier League fixture that is often the highlight of the season.

Normally we'd do a top five in galleries such as this, but we thought given the rivalry between the two sets of supporters that it's only fair to give both teams their fair dues. It wasn't as if there was a lack of stunners to choose from.

Here are SIX (yep, SIX) of the best goals in Manchester United vs. Liverpool history...

31/03/2001 - Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard scored a lot of goals in his time but this was one of the defining ones of his entire career. Manchester United travelled to Anfield that day hoping to avoid succumbing to defeat against the Reds twice in one season.

Gerrard had other ideas, though. This 35-yard strike gave Liverpool the lead and they didn't look back from that point on, eventually going on to win 2-0.

If you closed your eyes and imagined a Gerrard goal, it'd probably look a bit like this. A drive from distance, top corner, running away in a shirt that's probably a bit too big for him. Vintage Gerrard, vintage Liverpool, one to remember.

11/05/1996 - Eric Cantona

Even though I was a nine-year-old Scottish boy that idolised Paul McStay when Eric Cantona's strike went in, this is one of the clearest footballing memories of my childhood.

For me, The FA Cup is the defining competition of English football and moments like this are the reason why. I think it's the nonchalance, just the sheer beauty of producing a moment of magic from nothing and with little effort. That sums Cantona up.

Better than that though for Man United fans, it won a cup final against their bitter rivals, a key part of the enduring legacy left by Alex Ferguson's team in the 1990s.

What a goal, what a moment.

01/10/1995 - Robbie Fowler

In truth, we could have included both of Robbie Fowler's goals against Manchester United on 1st October 1995. They were both special in their own way.

The one we've picked though is his second. The strength, the pace, the flair, the sheer audacity to have a go at chipping Peter Schmeichel all add up to make it one of the finest goals ever scored in the fixture.

Schmeichel was not beaten often and when he was it was often special.

This fixture was one of the classics between the two sides through the 1990s, with Man United taking a lead before the Fowler double put the visitors ahead. A Man United penalty eventually saved defeat for the Red Devils.

19/09/2010 - Dimitar Berbatov

Dimitar Berbatov's performance against Liverpool in 2010 was one of the greatest in a Man United shirt in modern times. His hat-trick was an absolute delight for Red Devils fans in a season which saw them pick up another Premier League title and reach the final of the Champions League.

You won't be surprised to find out it's his second we've picked out from the three - it was, after all, one of the most aesthetically pleasing goals scored in English football in the last decade. Don't you love a goal that goes in off the bar? Not only that it was an overhead kick! Not only that he controlled it with his knee to set it up!

A beautiful goal worthy of winning any fixture, but in this one with the stakes so high, it rarely gets better.

04/03/2000 - Patrik Berger

No best goals list is complete without an absolutely belting free-kick and this one is no different.

Patrik Berger's rocket from distance gave Liverpool the lead at Old Trafford in a season they dominated. United would go on to equalise with the game ending 1-1 but this is a goal that will live long in the memory of any Liverpool fan.

Raimond van der Gouw had no chance of stopping it. Even if the goalkeeper got himself in front of it, the chances are he'd have ended up in the back of the net, too. In fact if the nets and the stand weren't there we're pretty sure this one would still be travelling almost 17 years on.

A true stunner!

18/10/1992 - Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes may be busy trying to build Stoke into a team that contend in the top half of the Premier League but he was of course, once upon a time, a very fine striker for Manchester United.

This goal was one of 163 for the forward in United colours, and one of the best.

The instinct to catch Bruce Grobbelaar off his line is superb but it's weight of his lobbed volley that really impresses - it couldn't have been better.

It's so good it makes us wonder whether he could still do a job for Stoke.
