It’s difficult to imagine a world where Gareth Bale wasn’t at his prime, but it wasn’t too long ago that the former Southampton youngster was struggling to make a name for himself – until one night in the Champions League catapulted him onto the world stage.
Six years ago, a young Bale was making an impression on the wing for Tottenham Hotspur, having started his career at White Hart Lane as a left-back, and during a European clash with Inter Milan he stole the show with an incredible hat-trick.

Since then, the Welshman has led his nation to the semi-finals of the European Championships and has won two Champions League titles in the last three seasons with Real Madrid, scoring a crucial goal in Real’s ‘La Decima’ victory over Atletico Madrid in 2014.
A year prior to that performance, Bale was on the brink of being axed by Spurs as he was underperforming in a defensive role, but Harry Redknapp had the best thought of his career and pushed him into an attacking role.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Does it bode well for his old side, Southampton? It’s funny that the stars have aligned in a way that this evening they face Inter at the San Siro. Maybe it’s a sign…
