Southampton fans are preparing themselves for relegation after Chelsea collapse

Southampton hosted Chelsea in the day’s early kick off in what was a dress rehearsal for next Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final but given the relegation trouble they’re in, it’s likely they’d have rather won here than at Wembley.

It looked as if they might just do exactly that and pile on more misery for the Blues  as Dusan Tadic’s first-half goal and a second half strike from Jan Bednarek put the Saints 2-0 up and on course to jump out of the relegation zone, at least for a matter of hours.

Marcus Alonso should have been dismissed as well when Mike Dean somehow missed his stamp on Shane Long, but the fact that he wasn’t was a precursor to an afternoon in which little would go right for the Saints.

Three goals in eight minutes – a double from Olivier Giroud either side of a cool Eden Hazard finish – meant that Southampton ended up with nothing and it was a tough one to take for the Saints faithful.

We’ve taken a closer look at the best of the reaction to the result…
