Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to laud Stuart Armstrong for his display against Aston Villa.

The former Celtic midfielder was making his 20th Premier League appearance of the campaign on Saturday, and proceeded to deliver a fine performance as the Saints grabbed all three points against Dean Smith's side.

Armstrong - who has 19 caps for Scotland - managed to net his third Premier League goal of the season with a 94th minute tap-in, after Pepe Reina had gone up for a last-minute corner.

Before that strike, however, the 27-year-old deserved plaudits anyway.

He recorded seven shots against the Villans - four more than anyone else on the pitch had - while he also registered a huge five key passes, which no other player on the St Mary's turf managed to equal.

Armstrong - who was signed for £7m by Mark Hughes - also completed three dribbles and made two successful tackles, on a day where he was heavily involved in most of what Southampton did well.

Let's see how the Saints supporters on Twitter reacted to his display...

To kick off the discussion, these two supporters both mentioned former Southampton star Steven Davis.

Dan Burridge said that Armstrong is quickly growing into the club's next version of the Irishman, adding that he just quietly goes about his business and does a brilliant job for the team.

@sfckieran then said that the former Celtic man's performance was Steven Davis-esque.

Elsewhere, Jeff said that Armstrong is the club's top team player, and that he's always pleased to see the Scot's name on the teamsheet.

@SfcGdog then said that Southampton are a different team without their No.17.

Lastly, Lee Myers said that Armstrong was phenomenal against Aston Villa.

What could've been... Can you name the clubs these football legends almost joined?

@SailorGirl30 then called the midfielder classy, before also saying that he does things simply and effectively, while also having the odd moments of brilliance about him - it's safe to say these supporters loved what they saw from the Scotland international.
