Arsenal make shock approach to beat man United to defensive star

Arsenal have made a surprise approach for Southampton’s Jose Fonte, who is also wanted by Manchester United, according to reports from ESPN.

The Portuguese centre-back, who helped his country to EURO 2016 glory earlier this summer, has risen from League One to the Premier League with the Saints and is considered to be one of the top tier’s better central defenders.

His performances have seemingly been recognised by some of the division’s elite sides, with Man United understood to have opened tentative talks regarding a late move for the 32-year-old, but reports claim that Arsenal have now also made an approach.

The Gunners were forced to start rookie Rob Holding and converted full-back Calum Chambers at centre-back during their opening weekend loss to Liverpool on Sunday, with Per Mertesacker and Gabriel both injured and Laurent Koscielny not yet match-fit after a long European Championship campaign with France.

Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi is thought to be their top target, while there have also been links with Omer Toprak and Simon Kjaer, but Fonte has been sounded out by the London club.

The experienced Southampton man is valued at around £10m.
