Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Charlie Austin launched a foul-mouthed attack on the club's supporters.

Austin - who signed for the Saints in a deal worth £4m from QPR back in 2016 - left St Mary's back in the summer after being frozen out by Ralph Hasenhuttl alongside Mario Lemina and taken off the first-team schedule.

The former Burnley striker joined West Brom in a £4m move after scoring 20 goals in 81 appearances for the Saints, although he may have now soured his reputation on the south coast for good following his latest Twitter antics.

We cannot repeat his words, although The Daily Echo reveal what he said as the English forward launched an attack on the St Mary's faithful for their lack of support towards the players during matches.

Following his use of profanity, the 30-year-old - who has since deleted his tweets - said: "You don’t sing to get behind the team only when they score never when they need a boost."

Naturally, his comments sparked a reaction from the Southampton supporters on Twitter.

Let's see what they thought of their former No.9's opinion on the St Mary's faithful...

To kick off the reaction, Cal said that watching Austin argue with supporters is something to be admired, as it's clear that the fans are still "living in his head rent free" even though he left the club months ago.

Samuel then assumed that the former Swindon Town forward "is now done" at St Mary's following the exchange - if he wasn't already finished, that is.

Elsewhere, @saintmike_sfc said that the moment of madness "tells you everything you need to know" about why Hasenhuttl was so keen to get rid of the attacker.

Then, Craig asked why Austin is "still even a thing" before calling him a "washed up nobody" - brutal comments, but maybe the striker deserved them.

Lastly, Rich encouraged supporters not to get involved in arguments with Austin as "all he does is" fish for interaction.

Glen de la Cour then echoed that comment, telling supporters who get annoyed by his antics to "put the phone down and get out more" - that's probably for the best.

Someone's got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?
