As reported by The Sun, Southampton are interested in signing Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson this summer.
Having narrowly avoided English Premier League relegation, the aim for Southampton in the transfer window is to strengthen key areas of their squad that almost cost them dear this season.
One of those areas is undoubtedly in the centre of defence, where they struggled consistently throughout 2017/18.
One player that could arrive at St Mary’s to help is Middlesbrough regular Ben Gibson.
That’s according to The Sun, who report that Southampton are lining up a £20m move for him this summer after another strong season at the Riverside Stadium.
With just a single season of Premier League football under his belt so far in his career, Southampton fans may be eager to point out they should be moving for more established top-tier talents than the likes of Gibson.
The centre-back is however one of his club’s most consistent performers and was a stand-out for the side in the 2016/17 season when they were relegated back to the Championship.
With passion and commitment, he could add a bit of leadership to Saints’ back line and perhaps help them be more organised on a consistent basis.
There are weaknesses to his game but as an affordable centre-back signing, Southampton could do a lot worse this summer.
