According to an interview as reported by Dutch media outlet Noordhollands Dagblad, Southampton defender Wesley Hoedt has produced some eye-catching comments about his recent situation with the south coast outfit having completed a loan move to Celta Vigo on Tuesday – per the club’s official website.
According to Noordhollands Dagblad via a translation, the 24-year-old is quoted as saying:
“It has been very strange. I played everything. Almost fifty games in a row I was in the team and I played ninety minutes. Until I suddenly I came to stand next to it. I never had a clear explanation.
“I just want to continue with what I was doing. I did well at Lazio and at Southampton. I want to continue that here.”
They really are.
Considering how poor Southampton were defensively and how they were battling at the foot of the table during the Dutchman’s consistent spell in the starting XI, for him to say he has no idea why he has been dropped from the starting XI is hard to comprehend – albeit even less confusing then him thinking he actually did well.
It’s not as though he was never at fault for many of the goals conceded either – he contributed two own goals against Liverpool and Manchester City this term in 13 Premier League outings – as he arrived at St Mary’s from Lazio in 2017 known for being strong in the air and decent on the ball – two attributes that were rarely seen during his spells under Mauricio Pellegrino and then Mark Hughes.
In a word, no.
The fact that Ralph Hasenhuttl has excluded him from the previous eight matchday squads altogether prior to his departure tells you all you need to know, and while he may still be young in centre-back terms and could have some potential to still be unlocked, there doesn’t appear to be a way back for him at the south coast outfit.
These comments also hint at an ego, suggest that he doesn’t have the right attitude to star under Hasenhuttl, and confirm that he isn’t the right fit for Southampton either now or in the future.
