In the January transfer window, Southampton were linked with a move for Nottingham Forest star Matty Cash.

The 22-year-old - who was also wanted by Italian giants AC Milan - has impressed this season in a right-back role under Sabri Lamouchi, having made 30 appearances on the right of midfield last term and not a single showing in defence.

He truly has taken to the role like a duck to water with three goals and four assists to his name in the Championship, while also registering an eye-catching 2.8 tackles per game.

The most recent of those three goals came in Forest's last outing against Championship leaders West Brom, in which Cash was on the money (apologies) in the 91st minute to nick a point for his side with a thunderbolt of a strike.

As well as his goal - which was the Forest No.11's only shot of the game - the Slough-born star also made one key pass and four clearances.

The right-back also left the Hawthorns with one successful dribble to his name, as well as one tackle and one interception - he also won two aerial duels against the Baggies.

Cash - who "shows pace in recovery" according to The Daily Mail's Secret Scout - managed to help Nottingham Forest remain in the playoff places with his stoppage time effort, leaving Lamouchi's side on 55 points, just eight off the top of the table.

It is unknown whether or not Southampton are still watching the Forest star, although if representatives of the Saints were present at the Hawthorns on Saturday, then we can't help but presume that they will have left the Midlands impressed with what they saw from the January target.

Cash is next in action when Forest welcome Queens Park Rangers to the City Ground on Saturday, and we presume that he will deliver another eye-catching performance given his consistency this term.
