The agent of Southampton’s new record signing, Sofiane Boufal, has revealed there was other big Premier League interest in his client, in a video posted by SFR Sport.
Boufal had made a name for himself as one of the most promising young talents playing in Europe and made a surprise move to the South Coast late on in the transfer window.
Now, as translated by ESPN, the 22-year-old’s agent has claimed that the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal were interested in the playmaker prior to his St. Mary’s move.
“We spoke to PSG,” said Yvan Le Mee.
“If Laurent had stayed at PSG he would have gone to PSG, because things would have happened quickly.”
Blanc was sacked and replaced with former Sevilla manager Unai Emery, though there is said to have also been interested within the Premier League.
“We also had Arsenal, who — when they lost out on Mahrez — came back to us, but it didn’t happen. We had Spurs,” he added.
“We had Chelsea, but though the club wanted to advance, [coach Antonio] Conte wasn’t too keen. It’s the job of the agent to say: ‘Wait — the coach isn’t as enthusiastic as the club. You shouldn’t do it.'”
The Moroccan will have to wait to make his debut, however, with Saints coach Claude Puel recently confirming he would be out for up to a month with a knee injury.
It has not been the best of starts for the Frenchman at the club, picking up just two points in their opening three games.
