According to Football Insider, Southampton are plotting a swoop for Oxford United centre-back Rob Dickie, who has also caught the eye of another Premier League outfit in Burnley.

What's the word, then?

Well, Ralph Hasenhuttl's men are believed to be keen on the 23-year-old who has just a year-and-a-half remaining on his contract with the League One side.

Football Insider state that Dickie caught the eye of scouts during Oxford's run to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup this season, where he impressed against West Ham and Manchester City.

The report also mentions that he delivered good displays in both fixtures against Newcastle recently, as Oxford forced the Magpies to an FA Cup fourth round replay and took Steve Bruce's men all the way to extra time.

Oxford may also be tempted to cash in on the former England U19 international this summer.

More assists than any other Southampton player

Presumably, the first thing you'd ponder after hearing that Southampton are keen on a centre-back is how well he fares defensively.

However, an interesting thing to note about Dickie is that he has four assists in League One this term, which is more set-ups than any of Hasenhuttl's players have managed to amass this term.

The next most productive Southampton player in that department is, coincidentally, another centre-back in Jack Stephens who has three assists to his name in the Premier League this season, while Sofiane Boufal, Shane Long and James Ward-Prowse are all tied on two each.

Another centre-back would surely be welcome at Southampton, as Jannik Vestergaard is the only option for the Austrian coach behind the first-choice pairing of Stephens and Jan Bednarek, following Maya Yoshida's January exit.

From non-League to the Premier League: Where did these top-flight stars begin their careers?

It remains to be seen if Dickie ends up at St Mary's, although one thing is for certain - on the basis of his numbers this term, he has been more efficient in terms of assists than any other player at Hasenhuttl's disposal.
