Southampton fans criticise Alex McCarthy performance

Southampton fans have criticised the performance of goalkeeper Alex McCarthy throughout their 3-1 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.

The 30-year-old made a decisive error against the Hammers leading to their second goal of the game, as he failed to claim a routine cross and lost possession to striker Sebastien Haller, who stretched to send the ball into the back of the net.

While he perhaps had little chance with either the first or third goals, supporters were unimpressed with his display as they fell to a dispiriting defeat.

One of the lowest standard Premier League games I have ever been to. We absolutely gifted them that. Horrendous defending for all 3 goals. McCarthy seriously needs to explain the 2nd and the Ward Prowse RB experiment failed miserably. Not good enough! #SaintsFC

Ralph and McCarthy to blame for this. KWP should've started with JWP central. Awful substitutions as well. May have still had a chance had McCarthy shown any desire to catch the ball though. #SaintsFC

McCarthy had a shocker today. Although, many players weren’t great. We’ve conceded nine goals in our last three visits to the London stadium. Onto Newcastle at home next week. I expected our CBs to be monstered a bit, but you can't legislate for a goalkeeper who thinks he's out catching balloons in the park. Just awful. #saintsfc

Indeed, a number of supporters believe that a new goalkeeper is needed in the summer.

The only back-up to McCarthy in the first-team is Angus Gunn, with Fraser Forster allowed to move on loan to Celtic in the January transfer window.

McCarthy has cost us far too much lately. Gunn clearly isn’t up to it either. A 1st choice Goalkeeper is an absolute must this summer. #SaintsFC

I really do think we need to offload Gunn and McCarthy in the summer (hopefully easier than it’s been with Forster) get in an experienced number 2 as back up but someone from abroad who is a fantastic Goalkeeper to be our obvious number 1. #SaintsFC #NoMeltdownJustTruths

Saints were left 13^th after the loss but they are some way clear of the relegation zone; they were nine points ahead of the drop at full-time.
