Five forgotten heroes from Saints’ League One days

Southampton hosted Italian giants Inter Milan at St Mary’s in the Europa League last Thursday, in one of the biggest games in their history.

Claude Puel’s side claimed an all-important win to boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the competition, which would be another step forward on the incredible journey they have been on over the past few years.

Quite unbelievably, it is just six years ago that the Saints entertained Dagenham & Redbridge in a League One fixture. They ran out 4-0 winners on the night, with a certain Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring a brace.

That was the time the club started to build the momentum that has seen them reach the heights they are at today.

Alongside players like Jose Fonte, Morgan Schneiderlin, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert – who all later became Premier League regulars – who were some of the other key men back in that era, and what are they doing now?
