According to the Daily Echo, Southampton are yet to receive any transfer offers for goalkeepers Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster this summer.

What's the deal, then?

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has put Angus Gunn in as his preferred number one since being at the club, leaving the pair without first team action.

McCarthy was linked with a move to Liverpool to be the back-up shotstopper to Alisson, but no offer has been made.

He was a regular at St Mary's before Hasenhuttl took over, with former boss Mark Hughes preferring the England international to Gunn, even after the £13.5million transfer had been made.

But the Austrian had different ideas when he took charge, with McCarthy quickly finding himself on the bench and Forster often not even in the squad - something that has been a recurring theme in the past couple of seasons.

Is Forster set to get another chance?

While Forster may have only made one first-team appearance for the south coast outfit since Boxing Day 2017, the fact that he was given that opportunity by Hasenhuttl against West Ham, as well as the fact that the Daily Echo believe he has been the "most consistent performer in between the sticks during training", suggests he may still have a part to play.

McCarthy had a wonderful 2017/18 season when he was named the club's player of the year after replacing Forster in goal during the Christmas period.

The 29-year-old went through a brilliant spell where he also earned his first England call-up, his only one to date.

And as a result it is likely Saints will be able to demand a larger fee for him given he has shown more impressive form over the past 12 months.

He is also two years younger than his teammate, while Forster is the highest paid player in Southampton's history so getting rid of those wages will be incredibly tough.

Hasenhuttl showed he does have some faith in the 31-yaer-old when he was picked in the penultimate fixture of the season against West Ham, and despite being beaten 3-0 Forster was not to blame for the defeat, as per the Daily Echo.

That demonstrated the Austrian is willing to try and make the most out of a bad situation - high wages and a long contract until 2022.

It will be incredibly tough to shift Forster onto another club and, given he is still performing at a high level in training, he may well get the chance to compete for the number one spot in 2019/20.
