Southampton striker Danny Ings praised "unbelievable" teammate Nathan Redmond following his side's 3-1 win against Aston Villa on Saturday, in what has been a poor campaign for the former Norwich City man.

What did he say?

Well, Saints' two-goal hero at Villa Park was asked about the contribution of his fellow attacker by BBC Radio Solent's Adam Blackmore post-match, and he had some nice words for the 25-year-old.

He said: "Redders has got absolute quality and everybody knows that. But the stuff he did off the ball today was unbelievable.

"You see him sprinting back in the last few minutes and things like that help the team just as much as creating chances. It's a credit to him and he works his socks off every day and he's very, very important for us."

The good thing about Redmond

Following an impressive 2018/19 campaign in which he scored nine goals and provided a further six assists – with all but two of those assists coming during Ralph Hasenhuttl's reign – it seemed as though the attacker had finally found the consistency he had been lacking previously going into this season.

A new four-year contract followed in the summer, but the winger has largely reverted to type this term, scoring one goal and failing to provide an assist in 16 Premier League outings in 2019/20.

His below-par performances haven't gone unnoticed by Southampton fans on Twitter either, and they have been happy to criticised the once-capped Englishman for the clear drop in the level of his displays.

A regular starter under Hasenhuttl when he is fit, Redmond bounced back from being taken off at half-time against West Ham last week to take his place in the starting XI against Villa, and he impressed.

He cleverly put through Shane Long in the build-up to the first goal, while his cross eventually led to Ings scoring the visitors' third, but it was his hard word off the ball defensively that was perhaps most impressive on the day.

Saints and Redmond himself will surely be hoping this is a turning point.
