Ralph Hasenhuttl has been speaking to the media about Southampton’s potential transfer activity and may have let the cat out of the bag when it comes to Everton wonderkid Ademola Lookman.
Sky Sports News reported the Saints manager on Thursday stating that he will look to sign players that suit his philosophy.
“For my kind of football, for my philosophy, I need more speed, I need more running quality, and therefore we will need new players. What we do now is [make] the big squad get a little bit smaller and then we will have a look if we find someone who helps us to move our deficits away.
“If we do something it must also be for the future, it doesn’t help us if we have a short-term we are facing, we have to have a longer-term [plan]. It should be a player who is not too old but fits perfectly in our philosophy and then it can be possible that we do something.”

While Hasenhuttl may not have gone as far as out-right stating that Everton’s Lookman will be the player he targets, the 21-year-old perfectly fits the description of who he would love to sign, and of course he has already worked with him previously in Germany.
The Charlton product possesses great potential but is already a rapid winger with top-flight experience, thanks to the Toffees and his six-month loan with Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.
His loan-stint in Germany came about due to a lack of minutes on offer with Sam Allardyce still in charge, but returned to the Premier League and has faced a similar situation under Marco Silva.
So far, after a possible 23 games in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, the Wandsworth-born ace has featured in 12 games, ten of which have been from the bench. Nevertheless, the 5 foot 9 forward has contributed to his side’s success with the assist for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late opening goal against Crystal Palace.
In Germany, Lookman become a sensation even more than he already could have been, with a hand in five goals and three assists, leading to the Red Bull-owned franchise attempting to purchase the England U21 international on a permanent basis with a series of failed bids.
Leipzig’s summer quest for his signature saw Everton turn away offers of up to £25million plus add-ons, as the Merseyside outfit looked to get a base fee of £28million for someone valued by TransferMarkt at £18m.
Given Southampton could present a threat to the Toffees in the Premier League, it would be unlikely Silva or Marcel Brands would consider any offer lower than the fee they demanded from Leipzig.
Should Hasenhuttl chase Lookman if the money can be raised? Let us know in the poll below…
