Southampton will reflect upon last weekend’s 0-0 draw with bottom of the table Newcastle United at St Mary’s Stadium as a major opportunity missed. The Saints, playing at home, ought to have won the match on the balance of play and strength of chances created, however, once again, the finishing of their front line let them down.

In ten league games so far, Mark Hughes’ side have managed just six goals. Danny Ings is the only striker off the mark, with Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini all yet to register.

Since making a bright start to his career on the south coast in 2017, the drastic tail off in Gabbaidini’s performances over the last year will be hugely disappointing to Saints fans. The club can’t afford to carry any more non-scoring strikers, and with a Transfermarkt valuation of £10.8 million, Hughes would be wise to cash in on the Italian in January.

If he is to save his Southampton career, the 26-year-old must get back amongst the goals soon - although to do that he needs to win Hughes over and convince him that he deserves to start Premier League matches.

What do you think, Saints fans - does Gabbiadini have a future at St Mary’s?
