The 2017-18 season will be one to forget for Southampton fans as the club had a very serious brush with relegation from the Premier League.

Mark Hughes, who was appointed as manager in March, was able to guide the coastal club to safety in the closing stages of the campaign.

Throughout the season, it was glaringly obvious that the Saints lacked firepower in the final third.

Manolo Gabbiadini, Shane Long and Charlie Austin struggled for consistency, and in the end, the team scored just 37 league goals.

It is no surprise that Southampton are being lined to attacking players in the summer transfer market, and one of those is Barcelona's Paco Alcacer.

According to a report in The Mirror earlier this month, the Spaniard, who is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, is on Hughes's radar.

Alcacer has been at the Camp Nou since 2016 when he signed from Valencia, but due to the outstanding talent within the squad, the forward has struggled for game time.

In fact, last season, the 24-year-old started just eight La Liga matches and made 23 appearances in all competitions.

During that time, the Spaniard netted seven goals and created four assists.

So, would Alcacer help Southampton regain goalscoring form?
